How is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu different from other martial arts?

The self defense and competition aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) are very technical and physically demanding.  It takes an average of 10 years to reach Black Belt in BJJ. The belt colors are white, blue, purple, brown and black.  It is generally accepted that a blue belt in BJJ is roughly equivalent to a black belt in other martial arts.

A purple, brown or black belt in BJJ can incapacitate virtually anyone on the planet in a matter of seconds in a self defense situation.  Many doubt that, but when they step on the mat and grapple with an advanced belt, the fight is over quickly in favor of the BJJ fighter.

In addition, most BJJ fighters are trained in other full-contact martial arts like kickboxing or boxing.  BJJ is devastatingly effective. It is not just a sport but the most effective method of self defense.

The Jiu-Jitsu brotherhood produced an excellent article on the belt progression in BJJ. Check it out by clicking on the link directly below.

Our Classes

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

image12

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport and one of the most effective forms of self defense.  It contains stand-up maneuvers, but it is most famous for its devastating ground-fighting techniques. Gaining superior positioning—so one can apply the style’s numerous chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations on an opponent—is the key in BJJ.

Kickboxing

image13

Kickboxing is a combat sport that consists of punching as in boxing and adds kicks from a standing position. Training in kickboxing/boxing allows one to control stand up aspects of a fight through movement, defensive maneuvers, and striking attacks. In addition to being an excellent form of self defense, especially in conjunction with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, it provides an excellent whole-body workout.

Youth Self Defense

image14

The Youth Self Defense class has a minimum age requirement of 10 and focuses on using Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) as the primary means of self defense.  In a self defense scenario the ability of someone to defend oneself arises from a real working knowledge of techniques. Those that wish to compete in sport jiu-jitsu and grappling can train to do so in this class.

Jiu-Jitsu Team Lineage
